Commissioner Joshua Simmons made history in November 2018 as the first African American Commissioner in Coral Springs since the city's incorporation in 1963. Simmons is a Emmy Award Winner and is a dedicated advocate for the Black community and Womenโs Rights. Simmons leads initiatives like 'Conversations with a Commissioner,' focusing on discussions about race, equality, and police practices. He's received recognition for his advocacy, including the Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero Award. Simmons serves on various boards and committees locally and nationally, including the National League of Cities Board of Directors. Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Simmons holds degrees in Political Science and Psychology from Florida Atlantic University. Before his political career, he worked in mental health and education. Simmons is also an accomplished author, having self-published the book "Jordan Frost and The Awakening" on March 5. He is passionate about ensuring Coral Springs remains a safe and inclusive community for all residents.
